How one Association uses Hybrid Events to Increase Programs, Membership, and Sponsors

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative psychotherapy approach for the treatment of trauma. The therapy is designated as effective by the most recognized national and international health agencies throughout the world. EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) was formed in 1995 to provide professional support for clinicians trained in EMDR therapy. Their mission is to set training standards, provide education along with a discussion forum dedicated to EMDR therapy, and encourage further research.

In 1996, EMDRIA hosted their first conference in Denver, and soon afterwards launched their website, EMDRIA.org. Eventually, EMDRIA began offering several professional development programs such as the EMDRIA Credit Program (continuing education), and the Certification Program, which awarded EMDR designations of Certified Therapist and Approved Consultant.

In 2002, EMDRIA invited the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) to evaluate them and recommend measures to safeguard and strengthen the association, and EMDRIA used these recommendations to develop new programs to better serve members’ needs.

As attendance at the annual EMDRIA conferences grew, so did its membership. Fast forward 20 years since their first conference, and EMDRIA realized they were facing new challenges. Part of their strategic plan focused on increasing membership diversity from private practice to include those working with nonprofits and counseling agencies. The problem was that some of these newer groups didn’t always have funding available to attend the conference. In addition, existing members who were having scheduling conflicts wanted EMDRIA to provide an online learning option.

Considering their challenges, EMDRIA’s leadership decided eLearning would be the most affordable option, which led them to look at a hybrid conference.  A hybrid event would maintain the in-person conference that many members still requested, and blend it with an online conference to reach those members who could not attend the live event. To keep risk at a minimum, EMDRIA leaders decided to use a Revenue Share Partnership and the iCohere Unified Learning System.
